Tigers '22 exciting rotation:
The Tigers have built their strongest rotation since 2016, it's a rotation that has been molded around young pitchers such as Casey Mize, Tarik Skubal, and Matt Manning. All 3 have made their way through the Tigers farm system. Eduardo Rodriguez signed a 5-year, 77 million dollar deal this off-season before the 99 day, MLB Lockout. Rodriguez joins the Tigers with 6 years of Major League experience, He played all of his first 6 seasons with the Boston Redsoxs. E-Rod has a record of 64-39 in his career, with 892 strikeouts and a career ERA of 4.16. Tigers' manager A.J Hinch announced Rodriguez as the opening day starter on April 8th vs The Chicago Whitesox... Detroit added their 5th of the rotation starter recently after signing veteran RHP' Michael Pineda to a 1-year, 5.5 million dollar contract. The rotation is set, but for Tigers' #15 ranked prospect Alex Faedo, it's another year of rebuilding his career after a setback injury...
Faedo's early potential:
The Tigers saw Alex Faedo's potential when they took him with their 1st round pick in 2017, around the start of the lengthy rebuild that lasted up until about half way through the '21 season, that's when the Tigers knew they had a roster they could build on and compete with. The former Florida Gators standout posted impressive numbers throughout his college career. As a freshman at Florida in 2015, Faedo appeared in 17 games with 12 starts and went 6–1 with a 3.23 ERA and 59 strikeouts. As a sophomore in 2016, he started 17 games and went 13–3 with a 3.18 ERA and 133 strikeouts. After the season, Faedo played for the United States collegiate national team. As a junior in 2017, he started 17 games during the regular season, and went 7–2 with a 2.60 ERA, with 132 strikeouts over 107+1⁄3 innings pitched, and helped lead Florida to the College World Series, and win their first National Championship. During the College World Series, Faedo allowed five hits and no runs, with 22 strikeouts in 14+1⁄3 innings against TCU. He was named to the All-Tournament Team and awarded the College World Series most outstanding player award...
Faedo's setback injury:
Alex Faedo's professional career hasn't treated him as well as his collegiate career. In 2018 he made his debut in the Tigers system with the Lakeland Flying Tigers, and in his first professional season he was promoted to the Erie SeaWolves, the Double-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. In 24 total starts between the Flying Tigers/Erie SeaWolves, he went 5-10 with a 4.02 ERA. Faedo returned to Erie to begin 2019. He made 22 starts for the 2019 SeaWolves, pitching to a 6-7 record with a 3.90 ERA and 134 strikeouts over 115+1⁄3 innings. After two seasons in the Minor League's, the Tigers added Faedo to the 40-man roster AFTER the 2020 season, but it was announced in December that he would need Tommy John Surgery, putting a very early end to his 2021 season. It's not a surprise that we'll see Faedo attempt to re-establish himself in Low-A, back with the Flying Tigers for a short time in 2022...
What to expect from Faedo down the road?:
Tommy John Surgery is a disastrous injury for any pitcher of any caliber, but especially for a young up & coming pitcher like Faedo. It's gonna be a difficult road for Faedo if he wants to continue his path of being a starter in the Major League's and making it even harder are guys like Jackson Jobe, Ty Madden, Reese Olsen, Joey Wentz, Dylan Smith, Beau Brieske, Wilmer Flores, Tanner Kohlhepp, and others... The Tigers have a stacked farm system loaded with young pitching talent, which is why I wouldn't be surprised if Faedo's path to the Major's is through the bullpen. Faedo will be a prospect to keep a close eye on this season as he looks to get back on the Tigers 40-man Roster...
