Tigers have eventful day before deadline:
It's been a hectic few hours for Detroit. At the time of me writing this there is 19 minutes before it's officially deadline day. By time it's published it will be deadline day. Although, there was still a day left before the Trade deadline, MLB front offices were very, very busy today as it seemed like the deadline for a majority of the time. We've seen names like Mancini, Hader, Quintana, Vasquez, McGuire, Odorizzi, Smith, and others that I'm forgetting on the move. The Tigers haven't been busy today, but it's still been an insane few hours for the club...
Tigers most intriguing trade canidate, Tarik Skubal injuried vs Twins:
On one hand, Tigers fans are gutted to see Ace' Tarik Skubal exit with an Injury, on the other hand, the odds of Skubal being traded by 6PM is very, very unlikely with the injury. Now you can't say your relieved his name is off the chopping block because it's uncertain how serious the injury is. The Tigers PR team announced on Twitter that Skubal left with "Left Arm fatigue"... Certainly an alarming injury. Skubal pitched just 5 innings and he looked sharp, he didn't allow a run in his outing. He threw just 77 pitches. Here's what Tarik Skubal said of his injury post game: “Something didn’t feel right. My arm felt fatigued,” Tarik Skubal said of his exit. “That’s why I came out of the game when I did. … I didn’t want to put myself at risk of something serious happening, so that’s why I was kind of like, ‘Guys, that’s all I’ve got.’”. It's worth mentioning that before his exit, Skubal's velocity was down to 92-93 MPH... Skubal's going to remain with the Detroit Tigers, that's now clear, they'll now be ultra focused on his recovery as they have lost so many starting pitchers this season...
Tigers notable trade canidates struggled vs the Twins:
It wasn't the greatest day for the Tigers who's names are being thrown around more than others. I already mentioned Skubal's injury, he didn't struggle but that's still a big name off the table. Michael Fulmer came in with a 2 run lead in the 8th (Tigers led 2-0 at the time) got 2 outs, but he had 2 on and Twins' Jose Miranda drove home 2 to tie it up. It was definitely not Fulmer's greatest outing of the year, and it may have been his last as a Tiger. Gregory Soto replaced Fulmer and was able to get the final out in the 8th inning. A.J Hinch sent Soto back out for the 9th and it started poorly after Nick Gordon, a speed demon, reached with a single, that was followed up by a single from Gary Sanchez. This was followed up by a rare instance where a Manager' walks out to the mound and leaves the pitcher in the game. There was runners on 1st & 2nd. Soto got an out, and the following hitter hit a deep fly ball to Centerfield and with Riley Greene playing shallow it looked like it was Game over for the Tigers but Greene tracked it down and made a great catch for the 2nd out, Gordon advanced to 3rd, meaning the winning run was 90 Feet Away. That brought up Carlos Correa, and here is where Soto was bailed out by Catcher' Tucker Barnhart... He walked Correa, it would've loaded the bases for Luis Arraez who is hitting well over .300... The ball got away though and Nick Gordon thought about trying to score, he changed his mind halfway home, tried to scramble back to 3rd and Barnhart gunned him down to end the inning, although he didn't allow a run Soto still struggled and it looked like he was bailed out by poor base running by Gordon, and great awareness by Barnhart. Long story short, Baddoo drove home the go-ahead run in the 10th for the Tigers, but they still blew it as Lange allowed Miranda' to yet again tie the game, that set up a 2-run walk-off Homerun for Twins' Gio Urshela, Tigers fell short 5-3 against Minnesota...
Tigers Trade OF, Robbie Grossman to defending WS Champion's, the Atlanta Braves:
Almost immediately after losing 5-3 to the Twins, Al Avila and the Tigers said so long to Veteran OF, Robbie Grossman. 32-year old Grossman spent 1½ seasons with Detroit, he had by far the best season of his career in 2021. 2022 has been a completely different story however, some would say the complete opposite as Grossman is arguably having the worst year of his career. Atlanta needed OF depth and Grossman will likely rotate through their Lineup. The Braves GM' said they plan to use him often as a pinch hitter, Grossman has a .999 OPS vs Lefty's in that role. The Tigers didn't get much back which was to be expected since Grossman's value was almost 0. The Tigers got LHP, Kris Anglin in return, and let's just say there's not much to look into with the southpaw, he's 4-6 this season with a 4.62 ERA, 52.1 IP, 56 K's, 1.43 WHIP, in 17 games played this season in the Minor Leagues. If Grossman wasn't traded by 6PM tomorrow then he was likely going to simply get cut. I personally wish Grossman the best moving forward as he was a big part of the Tigers having a surprisingly good season in 2021...
Thank you for reading, there will be much more to talk about tomorrow. Have a great week.
