Remembering former Detroit Lion Cecil Souders

Cecil Souders, the oldest living former NFL player has died at the age of 100...

Cecil Souders was a Ohio State University hall of famer, he was born in Bucyrus, Ohio in 1921. Football was his life from a young age. He also loved his country very much... He took a year off of school to join the Navy, he served in the Navy in World War ||. He was married for 81 years to his wife Jean Hoover and according to his family he died peacefully. He played Offensive tackle and defensive end in college and in 1946 he was a all-american. After being an all-american in 46' he played 3 seasons in the NFL All with the Detroit Lions, from 1947, 1948, 1949...He also played as a wide reciever in the NFL as well as pass rusher and OT... In 47' he played in 11 games, caught 15 passes, 184 yards, 1 touchdown. In 48' he played in 12 games but wasn't focused in as a wide reciever, he only caught 2 passes and had 19 recieving yards. In 49' He didn't have any reps as a WR, unfortunately it's hard to find his stats 48' and 49' in those other positions. But another fun fact from his career, he was drafted originally by the Washington Redskins in 1945 in the 25th round. He never played with Washington though because he decided to return to school. The draft was much different those days... Souders will always be remembered as a local legend in Ohio.

Rest in peace Cecil Souders, 1921-2021.
