There's no doubt about it that the former Washington State product is a decent quarterback in the league. He's shown that in his first few years completing 62 percent of his passes with a 93.1 passer rating. It's safe to say he isn't really the reason the Jags had the #1 pick this year. He played nine games in 2020 and was sacked 27 times, the correlation is obvious.
The Jaguars obviously would be fools not to pick to Trevor Lawrence though, he's the most touted quarterback we've seen come out of college in a decade. This just makes it more interesting for both parties.
Everyone expects Trevor Lawrence to be the starter come week one of the season, but Urban Meyer has still not guaranteed that through training camp. Minshew and Lawrence both have been getting first team reps to keep the competition up. Gardner Minshew relishes that opportunity.
All time quote.
The reality of it is though that Urban Meyer was not brought to Jacksonville to play around with this quarterback situation. The plan was for him to have his guy and they build something special down in Jacksonville. Minshew is just the guy that's still there.
The real reason Meyer is giving the reps to Minshew is because the Jags are trying to increase some trade value on their second-string. Like I said before he has some solid numbers in his young career, and some teams may want to give him a shot for a measly 3rd-5th round pick., or even cough up a player that could help the Jags out. Either way there's no way Lawrence is going to be sitting on the bench. Not only would Jags fan riot, I think the NFL fan base as a whole would too.
I for one would love to see the Falcons roll the dice on him for if anything happens to Matt Ryan. Since the Falcons didn't draft a quarterback and AJ Mccaron and Felipe Franks both failed to score in their first preseason game.
Minshew is young in this league, super gritty, and has shown flashes of success. Jacksonville just isn't going to be the place for him to do it anymore because King Lawrence has arrived.
